Mantras for Success: What it Takes to Reach the Top

By Shiv Malik

What is the alchemy of success? Which qualities, habits and attitudes lead to sustained success and not merely an ephemeral one? How can you get these traits? Mere brilliance and hard work does not guarantee outstanding success. How then does one reach the top? There is life beyond success. How does one achieve the inscrutable balance? What makes us a complete woman/man? This book answers these questions.

Shiv Malik started his career as a sales representative in 1963. He became the Chairman and Managing Director of PEC Ltd. (1989–93) and MMTC Ltd. (1992–97) during the tumultuous years when MMTC lost about 80 per cent of its annual business of Rs 8,000 crores, thanks to the Trade Reforms and loss of trading monopoly in 1991. He led their turnaround and transformation from Government monopolies to highly competitive and successful global companies. He also led MMTC to establish Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd. (NINL), a 1.1 million tons integrated pig iron/steel plant.

He served on many other Boards including those of NMDC, STC, MTNL, NALCO, NINL, MMTC Transnational Pte Ltd., Singapore as chairman and National Centre for Trade Information (NCTI), etc.
Presently he is chairman of his consultancy outfit, Mentors, and is a consultant with major companies.

He has recently authored Turnaround: A Public Sector Story, which tells the story of the transformation of these companies and suggests ways to turnaround the public sector. He has contributed a paper as one of the co-authors of a recent book Economic Diplomacy: India’s Experience in collaboration with senior diplomats, a recommended reading in the London School of Economics.

He lives in Faridabad and can be reached at snmalik18@yahoo.co.in.
